During Black History Month, Urbanite Nashville Magazine spotlighted Denise McBride, a dedicated board member of the Nashville Foundation for Women of Color, Inc. (NFWOC), as she shared the powerful legacy of her mother, Mrs. Phyliss Inez Galloway Meekins.
Mrs. Meekins was one of the 855 remarkable women who served in the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion deployed overseas during World War II. Known as the "Six Triple Eight," these trailblazing women played a pivotal role in clearing a massive backlog of mail, ensuring that soldiers on the front lines received messages from home. Their story has been recently brought to life in Tyler Perry’s Netflix film, Six Triple Eight.
In 2022, Denise had the honor of attending the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony recognizing the 6888th Battalion’s extraordinary service. This momentous event also allowed her to finally meet many of the descendants she had been corresponding with—connecting over a shared history of resilience and service.
NFWOC celebrates Denise McBride for keeping this vital history alive and honoring the women of the 6888th Battalion. Their courage and dedication paved the way for future generations, and their story deserves to be remembered.
